Post-Storm Update - July 2nd, 3:15pm

.
**UPDATE** Just received word that the Mayor is coming to the Cooling Center here at 5225 York Road at 5:20pm today, to address citizen concerns.  If you've got an issue, come on over!

As of 3:11pm today, 64,325 customers in Baltimore City remain without power. Restorations continue and for 91,650 customers, power has been restored. Full restoration is estimated to be a long-term operation lasting into the coming weekend.

DOT currently has fewer than 100 signals that are without power; 45 portable generators are being used at major intersections, supplemented by 10 Special Transportation Enforcement Officers (STEOs) where needed.  They are moving the generators and the STEOs around as power is restored.  Motorists should use extreme caution when encountering an intersection with disabled signals and should treat it as a four-way stop.

The City continues to clear trees from blocked roadways and utility lines. Multiple crews are working on the approximately 130 trees still blocking roadways.

Most of the public/senior housing developments that were without power have at least partial power and the Housing Authority has a protocol in place to look after residents.

As a result of the record breaking heat this weekend, ill effects of power outages are greatly magnified.  The City has activated 11 cooling centers and is communicating with local places of worship to enhance capabilities.  In our area, the Northern District Community Action Center - co-located with my district office at 5225 York Road - is open as a Cooling Center.

The Center is open today and tomorrow during the Code Red Heat Alert from 9am to 7pm, providing air-conditioned comfort and bottled water, free of charge!  (No word yet on whether there will be any/reduced hours on Wednesday, when the City is closed for Fourth of July.)

The City is still giving away ice at the following locations:
1500 Havenwood Road (Northwood Shopping Center)
4501 Reisterstown Road
1700 N. Gay Street
1601 Baker Street

For more information on coping with the Code Red Heat Alert, click here to go to the Health Department's website.  Otherwise, keep staying cool, keep helping your neighbors, and keep hanging in there!
