Advisory: Fire Department to Conduct Citywide Neighborhood Sweep to Reinforce Home Fire Safety -- Saturday, June 8

BALTIMORE, MD. (JUNE 7, 2013) – In response to the house fire that claimed the life of a 70-year-old, and injured six others, Baltimore City firefighters will take part in a citywide Neighborhood Sweep to remind residents about measures they can take to protect their home from fire. The Neighborhood Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon.

The official launch of the citywide event will be at the corner of 3900 block Fairhaven Avenue at 10:00 a.m.

Firefighters will canvas the City of Baltimore by walking through communities to engage with citizens and install smoke alarms wherever needed. Smoke alarms with a 10-year lithium tamper-resistant battery are made available by federal grant funding and a grant from Baltimore Gas and Electric.

"Each of our fire stations serves as an anchor in their community, and these sweep allow us to reach out and help make our neighborhoods safer,” said Chief Clack. “We are committed to involving every resident in our effort to reduce fires and fire deaths.”

In 2012, twelve individuals were lost in fires, down from 17 fire deaths in 2011. The 2012 numbers represent the fewest annual fire deaths on record in Baltimore. The Fire Department distributed and installed more than 5,200 free smoke alarms in 2012—averaging 14 individual alarms per day. Anyone without a smoke alarm is asked to call 311 to request a free smoke alarm and within two hours firefighters will come to your home and install a new alarm.
